What is base-isolation system?Types of base isolation system?what are the principles and advantages of this base isolation system?Learn everything about base isolation in a simplest way.

1.What is Base Isolation System?

well,Base isolation is a type of system in which the super-structure is isolated from the Base structure(foundation) by a suspension.

It sounds very simple but in practical It's not.
No need to worry as i will clarify the whole system to you in a simplest way.

Base isolation system is generally used to reduce the ground vibration(caused by earthquake) that can cause damage to the structure.

This system actually helps to reduce the frequency and magnitude of the ground vibration(caused by earthquake).
And we all know LESS VIBRATION MEANS LESS DAMAGE.

2.Why we are talking about Base Isolation Techniques?

Have you ever thought that why we are talking about Base-isolation techniques instead of Earthquake proof structure?

In case of Earthquake proof structure , we need to increase the ductility of the structure and also the elastic strength of the structure, WHICH is very complicated process .Also this method requires highly skilled engineers and labour to implement the work.

Similarly in case of Base isolation techniques we just need to put - shock absorber/suspension/damping system, which separates the super structure and the foundation.

Though isolation system also requires highly skilled labour but this technique performs very well under seismic forces and wind loads rather than traditional Earthquake-resistant structure.

[SAFETY IS THE FIRST PRIORITY FOR CIVIL ENGINEERS AND THIS SYSTEM PROVIDES YOU MORE SAFETY]

3.Working Principle of Base Isolation System-

The basic and most important principle is to reducing the effect of ground shaking by absorbing the magnitude of seismic waves.

In this system, engineers reduces the seismic DEMAND instead of increasing the lateral load resisting CAPACITY.

Due to earthquake load, every building or structure achieve some acceleration and displacement.

Here,This acceleration and displacement is controlled by transferring the motion of ground(possible by Base isolation system).

Displacement caused by earthquake occurs at the CG of the structure for fixed base structure(at 2/3* height of building) but in case of isolated system displacement occurs at the isolation plane.

AND it can be observed that the magnitude of displacement is very less when we have Base isolation system.

4.Components of Base isolation-

  • Damping system
  • flexibility
  • Resistance to vertical loads.

5.Types of base isolation system-

i. Spring-

Most suitable for mechanical purpose as it is highly flexible.
High flexibility can cause large deformation which is not acceptable for structural system.

ii. sliding bearing-

This method works by the principle of friction.
By providing sliding bearing acceleration and displacement can be transferred.

iii. Elastomeric rubber bearings-

This type of bearing is suitable for high vertical loads. It allows a small amount of deflection.
this system consists of steel bar damper and laminated rubber bearing.

iv.Roller and ball bearing-

Separation of super structure from its base is done by cylinders or roller.
Balls are used as rolling element.

Advantages of Base Isolation-

  • Reduces the overall cost of structure.
  • gives less displacement of structure
  • provides more factor of safety
  • provides good performance of structure under lateral load

SUMMARY-

Base isolation system is an alternative method of earthquake resistant structure. All base isolation structure is earthquake proof structure but all earthquake proof structure is not base isolated system.
There are many advantages of base isolation but still few drawbacks are also there.
The main problem is that the base isolation system is not suitable where the condition of soil is soft.
In future we can see more improvement in base isolation system or we can see some better alternative of base isolation system that can  protect the super-structure from seismic waves and lateral loads.
